When it's freezing temps outside your indoor plumbing could be at risk. Have you ever opened a cabinet on an outside wall and felt the cold. This is because your cabinet being closed makes it difficult for your heat to get in and if there is plumbing in the cabinet they could be at risk of freezing !
One way to protect yourself is to leave your cabinet open when it's cold outside. This method has a few drawbacks, one is you have to always remember to so this and the other is if you have pets or children.
A more permanent fix is to drill some holes down where the kick plate is. Doing this will allow heat from the kitchen into the cabinet when it's closed.
